Hypertension Drugs-Tekturna
In Hypertension control, there is rarely a 'One Size Fits All' treatment option.  More often than not, the treatment of a patient's blood pressure evolves over time, and usually involves more than one medication.

Some newer medications combine blood pressure medications into one pill to make taking daily medications easier.

We will add to the blood pressure medication list below over time.  The list is by no means all inclusive, and as always on this site, does not represent specific medical advice. Talk to your doctor about your treatment options and work with her or him to achieve the best blood pressure control possible for your body.
What is Tekturna HCL?

You may have heard of water pills being used to control hypertension.  Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) is an older but useful water pill, often used for initial blood pressure treatment.

Many, if not most patients, however, require two or more medication to maintain adequate systolic and disastolic blood pressure maintenance.

One combination drug, relatively recently approved by the FDA is Tekturna.  Tekturna is a combination of:

  • HCTZ, a water pill to reduce sodium and water and
  • Tekturna, which binds to the enzyme RENIN.  Renin increases blood pressure by narrowing the blood vessels.
Additional Tekturna Information:

  • Tekturna's generic name is aliskiren
  • There is a black box warning on the Tekturna prescribing information recommending that Tekturna NOT be used in pregnancy
  • There are quite a few drugs which are noted to have drug interactions with Tekturna
As always--
  • Do NOT self medicate.
  • Do NOT take a friend or relative's medications.
  • Write down the names of your medications and carry the list with you.
  • Stay under the care of your health care provider for the treatment of your hypertension.
