Tell me more about Diastolic Blood Pressure
(okay...if you agree to stop calling it "The Bottom Number")
Now that we have a deal, the Diastolic Blood
Pressure represents the pressure in your arteries between heart beats.
In a sense, it is the momentary resting blood pressure in your major
blood vessels. If your heart beat is slow, your doctor may relax the
arm cuff very
slowly in order to hear the blood pressure sounds accurately and
determine when both the systolic and diastolic sounds began and ended
respectively.
How can my doctor "hear" my Diastolic pressure?
How
can your doctor "hear" your diastolic pressure, if we said diastolic
pressure was when there was no more turbulence or sound in your
arteries?
Great question!
Actually, the pressure read on the sphygmomanometer at the last sound heard is used as the Diastolic sound or diastolic pressure.
